# Keyword market

> Why est_avg_monthly_sales on a keyword is null for now.

**Version 2026-10.** This page covers `est_avg_monthly_sales`, in a keyword's `market`.

`est_avg_monthly_sales` is always `null` for now. It is meant to be the average monthly sales of the products that rank for the keyword, but the only figure Alura stores for it averages an older per-product monthly number that is missing, and stored as 0, for most products. An average of mostly made-up zeros isn't an estimate, so the API doesn't return one.

When Alura computes it from the monthly sales estimates in [Sales estimates](/methodology/sales-estimates), leaving out products with no estimate, the field will start carrying numbers and this page will get a new version. Until then, compare keywords by `volume`, `competition` and `trend`, or look at the products that rank for a keyword with `GET /v1/research/keywords/{id}/products`.

## Limits

* `null` means unknown, never 0.
* The other `market` field, `avg_price_usd`, is the average price of the matching products priced in US dollars. It is not an estimate.
